More Money & Coin Collecting News
Perhaps the most fascinating field of Canadian Numismatics is paper money. The issues to be collected and studied extend from the card money of 1685 up to the present period, and include issues by a number of Colonies (Provinces) prior to Confederation, local governments, private, and chartered banks, business institutions, the Dominion of Canada and the Bank of Canada. Many collectors also include merchant notes or 'bons', education notes issued by Business Colleges, notes issued for political purposes and advertising "bills".

Decide what type of paper money collection you want to have. Some people only collect banknotes which contain a certain image (fish, tractors, etc.). Others strive to obtain collections of currency from countries which no longer exist (Biafra, Rhodesia, etc.) Some focus on one single country while others try to collect from every country. It's all up to you and your interests. The variety of banknotes out there is so vast that there is bound to be some category you are interested in.

Number One on my avoid list is the TV shopping show dealers and premium "Mints" out there that sell nice looking commemorative coins for premium prices, but that have no value beyond their bullion (if they have any) when you must eventually sell them. Some of these "Mints" sell on the TV and cable-based shopping channels, and the prices they charge when they do sell genuine U.S. Mint coins are nearly always several times higher than the price the coins would cost from a normal coin dealer! These shows rarely sell anything that can't be acquired elsewhere more cheaply, so don't impulse buy from these shows! Do a little research and you'll see the same Silver Eagles at $2 over spot price from major traditional coin dealers. Most of the Uncirculated Morgan Dollars I've seen TV shopping show dealers sell for $300 each can be purchased from a normal coin dealer for $30. Never buy coins from TV shopping shows!

If a banknote collector ever falls down at heel, he has a valuable nest egg in store, which he can sell at one of the specialist collectors auctions - often at an amazing profit. Many collections however, are passed on within the family - to a son, a daughter or a grandchild. Indeed, a banknote collection makes a superb family heirloom, for besides being a thing if monetary value, and a gold-mine of interesting information, it also conveys the spirit of the compiler

On my personal "do not buy" list are coins issued by the National Collector's Mint. The U.S. Mint has issued warnings about this company's misleading advertisements in the past, particularly its "Freedom Tower" coins. National Collector's Mint ads imply that Freedom Tower coins have meaningful amounts of precious metal in them when they do not. In addition, despite the perception they often give to the contrary, nothing this "Mint" makes has any association whatsoever with the genuine U.S. Mint, and it is my opinion that the coins they sell are, and will remain, virtually worthless as an investment collectible.

Typically, collectors will use an adequate reference book to find the note they want. Then, they look through the many price lists they might have to find a dealer who offers the same note in an acceptable condition for an acceptable price. Lots of dealers put parts of their price lists in Bank Note Reporter ads. The collector then either calls or faxes the dealer with a credit card number or send a check in the mail.

If you do decide to clean your old coins they are best cleaned with soap and a soft cloth or you can use Vaseline or olive oil and a Q-tip. These methods can remove dirt and grime while not scratching the surface. Because gold is inert, it does not tone when it comes in contact with oxygen and so a simple surface cleaning will not usually change the coin's appearance. Silver coins, including pre-1965 half dollars, quarters and dimes, will retain the same toning (good or bad), as this kind of cleaning does not remove the surface layer, but it may remove dirt, grime, and some oils from the surface of the coin.

There are four main reasons I recommend diversifying within your gold coin portfolio. First, let's look at the fun aspect. At the end of the day, one of the big reasons I invest in gold is because of the fun factor. The coins are just plain neat! Why would I want to own all of the same thing, when I can get a sample of all different types and sizes of coins? As a reward to myself as an investor and collector, I try to not always buy the same thing.
