The South African Kruggerand gold coins are the world's first gold bullion coin minted for investment, the Krugerrand is believed to be the most widely owned bullion coin in the world. The Krugerrand's obverse, designed by O. Schultz, features the first President of the South African Republic, Paul Kruger. Due to Kruger's relationship with Apartheid, these coins are the least expensive of all the major gold bullion coins. Kruger is surrounded by the name of his nation in Afrikaans and English, two of South Africa's eleven official languages: SUID-AFRIKA SOUTH AFRICA

Decide what type of paper money collection you want to have. Some people only collect banknotes which contain a certain image (fish, tractors, etc.). Others strive to obtain collections of currency from countries which no longer exist (Biafra, Rhodesia, etc.) Some focus on one single country while others try to collect from every country. It's all up to you and your interests. The variety of banknotes out there is so vast that there is bound to be some category you are interested in.

Have you ever held a gold coin in your hand? It's amazing! When you first hold a gold coin, the luster and weight immediately tell you why gold coins have been the standard in storing wealth for all of human history. So what do gold coins have to do with saving money for your mortgage down payment? It's actually very simple: gold attracts wealth. Some people call it attraction, others call it luck. Whichever you prefer, if you own a gold coin you will earn more income. Wealth will be attracted to you and you will save enough money for your down payment sooner than if you did not own the coin. Buy a gold coin and give your luck a boost.

Old gold coins should never be cleaned. But it's not just excited treasure hunters that make this mistake. Even archaeologists working with ancient coins come under fire for the practice of restoring ancient coins, although in their case it may be necessary in order to see the coin well enough to properly date and categorize it. Those coins will not end up in most collections. But then again, archaeologists are not trying to preserve numismatic value.

Whether you are buying from a bricks and mortar dealer or buying online through a website or an auction site like EBay, check the reliability of the dealer. For a store, at least check with the local Better Business Bureau. If the dealer is a member of the Professional Numismatists Guild (PNG), that is a big plus. For an EBay auction, check the seller's feedback rating. If it's very low, or there are many negatives, think twice before spending a large sum with them. On large ticket items, ask if the seller will agree to use Escrow.com. They act as a middleman and the money doesn't pass to the seller until the buyer is satisfied with the item. The buyer will pay a charge, but it's well worth it when big money is changing hands.

Unusual Items: 1792 Birch Cent

Fri, 21 Nov 2008 14:51:21 +0000
The patterns of 1792 are among the most intriguing stories in the history of U.S. numismatics. Carl Carlson published an extensive article about them in the March 1982 Numismatist. In this lengthy and worthwhile article, he brought together findings from previous researchers who had examined the series, and led in a methodical fashion queries into ...]

Canadian Maple Leaf Coins

By Randy Zakowski

Canadian Maple Leaf Coins are the official bullion coins of Canada made by the Royal Canadian Mint. They come in the metals of gold, silver, platinum, and palladium.

The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf was designed by Walter Ott and has been minted since 1979. It is made of .9999 fine gold with almost no base metals mined only in Canada. It is made in 1/20 oz worth $1C, 1/10 oz worth $5C, 1/4 oz worth $10C, 1/2 oz worth $20C, and 1 oz worth $50C. The obverse of the coin has Queen Elizabeth II and the reverse has a picture of a Canadian Maple Leaf. There are two different variations of the obverse, 39-year old Elizabeth II and 64-year old Elizabeth II.

TheCanadian Maple Leaf silver dollar has been minted since 1988. It is made of 1 ounce of .9999 fine silver and is worth $5C. It has an average mintage of 935,680 coins per year. There has been many different variations to this coin including the Privy Mark Silver Maple Leaf, the Coloured Silver Maple Leaf, the Hologram Silver Maple Leaf, and the Olympic Maple Leaf. The obverse of the coin has one of three pictures of Elizabeth II, at age 39, age 64, and age 79. The reverse has a picture of the Canadian Maple Leaf.

The Canadian Platinum Maple Leaf was minted from 1988 to 1999 and then again in 2002. It was made of .9995 fine platinum in 1/20 oz worth $1C, 1/10 oz worth $5C, 1/4 oz worth $10C, 1/2 oz worth $20C, and 1 oz worth $50C. The obverse of the coin has Queen Elizabeth II and the reverse has a picture of a Canadian Maple Leaf. Like the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf, there are two different variations of the obverse, 39-year old Elizabeth II and 64-year old Elizabeth II.

The Canadian Palladium Maple Leaf started being minted in 2005 and has continued to be minted since. It is made of 1 ounce of .9995 fine palladium. The obverse has a picture of Queen Elizabeth II at age 79 and the reverse has a picture of a Canadian Maple Leaf.

The Canadian Maple Leaves are the ultimate Canadian collectible coins. The values of these coins are planned to increase due to the rising prices of precious metals and their low mintages. Get yours while you can before they go up in price.

Snippets Of Numismatists News

Number One on my avoid list is the TV shopping show dealers and premium "Mints" out there that sell nice looking commemorative coins for premium prices, but that have no value beyond their bullion (if they have any) when you must eventually sell them. Some of these "Mints" sell on the TV and cable-based shopping channels, and the prices they charge when they do sell genuine U.S. Mint coins are nearly always several times higher than the price the coins would cost from a normal coin dealer! These shows rarely sell anything that can't be acquired elsewhere more cheaply, so don't impulse buy from these shows! Do a little research and you'll see the same Silver Eagles at $2 over spot price from major traditional coin dealers. Most of the Uncirculated Morgan Dollars I've seen TV shopping show dealers sell for $300 each can be purchased from a normal coin dealer for $30. Never buy coins from TV shopping shows!

One big category of coin damage we see is from staple scratches. Much of this damage comes from staples that are not completely clinched. Normal staplers leave a curl of the staple rising above the surface. This piece of staple can easily scratch adjacent coins as the coin shifts in a box or is removed or inserted from the box. Flat clinch staplers fully compress the staple into the surface of the holder leaving nothing behind to damage other coins. We like the Max HD-50DF because it is full size and uses regular staples. Max also makes half strip and palm size versions for collectors that prefer a smaller stapler. All three staplers completely clinch the staple as part of the stapling proces

On my list of "do not buy" coins is those from the Franklin Mint and other premium collectibles mints (such as the Bradford Exchange, etc.) They are aggressive marketers who do sell genuine bullion coins (sometimes) but their coins usually do not have any after-market value among coin collectors and investors. You'll typically pay $45 plus for a one ounce silver coin that is only worth the value of its silver bullion when you go to sell it. (Silver bullion is at about $19 an ounce as I write this.)

Many Colonial, Early American and Confederate notes have been reproduced throughout the 20th century and sold as souvenir and novelty items or included as premiums with bubble gum. While the notes may look and feel old and brittle, as if they really were printed years ago, in actuality, paper produced before the early 20th century had a high rag content and lacked acid, the chemical that causes paper to become yellow and brittle. Genuine notes from this period remain quite white and supple.

Gold Coins

By Josh Riverside

Gold need not be bought only as gold bars or as jewelry. Buying gold coins is a far better and simpler option as it costs as little as $40 and is easy to store; they can be hidden anywhere in the house or stored in a bank.

There are many different types of gold coins available all over the world like the American Eagles, South African Krugerrands, Australian and UK sovereigns, Canadian Maple Leafs, and the Chinese Pandas. When starting your gold coin collection, the best gold coins to buy are the American Eagles or Gold Sovereigns as they are the most common gold coins. Keep in mind that there is no fixed size or weight for a gold coin; they are measured depending on value and weight, which varies according to the size of the gold coin. Of course, the unit of measurement for gold coins is the gram, but previously it was measured in troy ounces or a part of an ounce. The purity of gold bars is measured as 999 parts per 1,000, which is the purest form of gold. Most gold coins are usually 917 parts per 1,000, as some other metal is added to them to make them easier to mint.

When planning to buy a gold coin from the Internet or an offline shop, make sure all required information of the gold coinlike its name, make, and typeis displayed. If buying online, you have the right to demand a picture of the gold coin, too. The price for the gold coin will be the price quoted by the seller, with his margin and any applicable tax. There is no coin that can be called the best gold coin to buy. It is all a matter of personal taste; some people may prefer the American Eagles while others, Sovereigns.

Paper Money & Coin Collecting Info

There is a good way to diversify in gold coin investing: by date. When you start getting into date and buying older coins, you get into the realm of numismatics. Once you have a solid bullion collection of coins, old and rare coins can definitely help your diversification cause. One great way to do this is to throw a few $20 gold Saint Gaudens double eagles in your portfolio, the most beautiful gold coin of all time. However, the topic of numismatics is a little beyond the scope of this article which is all about diversifying your bullion coin collection.

The most effective way to get paper money is not through general circulation, but through dealers, collectors, auctions, and shows. About once a week someone posts a message asking for people to trade/buy/sell paper money. Even with the large audience of rec.collecting.coins, you don't reach many collectors. But this is still one way many people get notes.

A major type of luster is prooflike. When dies are readied for production they are polished and/or rubbed with a cloth in order to make them appear bright and new. This polish fades rather quickly and certain issues are almost never seen with mirror-like reflectiveness. As an example, I have seen very few Prooflike coins from Charlotte and Dahlonega and only a handful from New Orleans.

One of the most common hobbies is collecting money. Many people have enjoyed this activity for decades and money collecting is thriving even today. As a hobby, collecting money means collecting old money. Otherwise, we are all trying to collect money before the bills come. However, do you know how many people collect old money, antique notes and coins from previous decades and even centuries?
