Old U.S. Federal Reserve Notes, 1928, 1934, 1950, 1963, etc. Most circulated Federal Reserve Notes from more modern series are worth no more than face value. Some of the early series notes (1928 and 1934) do carry a small premium, although for circulated notes this premium is small, usually 10% to 30%. Premiums are higher as a percentage of face value for lower denomination notes, such as $5 and $10 bills, as opposed to the higher denomination $20s, $50s, and $100s. Uncirculated notes and Star Notes of some of the earlier series do carry a large collector premium in some cases, and we highly recommend the standard reference book in this field, the Standard Guide to Small Size U.S. Paper Money (1928 to date), by Dean Oakes and John Schwartz, for more information.

How does the silver coin's edge look? If the coin edge should be reeded, and isn't (or vice versa) this is a giant red flag, since mint errors of this type are very rare. Also, if the coin has a seam around the edge, a bit of a protrusion on the edge that could be a casting sprue, or file marks indicating a sprue or seam was removed, don't buy the coin!

Does the silver coin pass a magnification check? Although the methods listed above will usually enable you to rule out most fakes (especially the weight test,) sometimes close examination under a strong magnifier settles the matter. Look for silver plating that failed to fill into tiny spots and crevices. Look at the edge of the coin to see if the plating is visible where the rim meets the side; also look between the reeding. Sometimes just looking at the fields under 10x is enough to condemn the silver coin as a fake, because the fields may appear rough, or have spots of copper or other non-silver impurities.

In general, I highly prefer giving bullion coins as gifts for two main reasons. First, bullion is cheaper. I'm usually on a very limited gift budget and expensive rare coins are just not an option for me. Second, unless you are giving a gift to a seasoned coin collector, the average person will not know or deeply appreciate the difference between bullion and numismatics. In introducing someone to the world of gold, bullion is great. Moreover, many bullion coins these days such as American Eagles and Canadian Maple leafs are truly beautiful coins. Get a mint brand new bullion coin and you will be giving away a valuable and beautiful gift.

The $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle gold coin is a great way for investors to add growth and stability to their current mix of assets. Investors privately acquire this gold coin which has outperformed the stock market over the last 5 years. U.S. Congress was prompted to authorize the mintage of a twenty dollar gold coin in 1849 due to the California gold rush. Up until that time the U.S Mint created only $2.50, $5 and $10 gold coins. The $20 Dollar Liberty gold piece was minted from 1850 to 1907.

Historically the U.S. Treasury has issued many different types of notes. These notes bear numbers and seals in a variety of different colors that are distinctive to the type of note. The most common note in circulation today, and the one that we are used to seeing, is the Federal Reserve note bearing a green seal and numbers. Following is a listing of the note types and seal colors:
Silver Certificates---blue seal
United States Notes---red seal
National Bank Notes---brown seal
Gold Certificates---yellow/orange seal

In general, I collect pre-1965 90% silver U.S. coinage in very high grades, and I think they are excellent choices for the average person on a tight budget. I also believe that most types of U.S. Nickels are very undervalued right now, as well as later date (2002 through 2007) half dollars in the highest grades. The mintages for these recent half dollars are extremely low! In general, most Walking Liberty, Franklin, and silver Kennedy half dollars are undervalued according to many experts.

How do you value a truly rare coin anyway?

Sun, 09 Dec 2007 04:21:00 +0000
A few days after my recent post on the difficulties of valuing my unique mint state 1860-O $20 gold double eagle, a similar article appeared on this topic by coin dealer Rusty Goe. His article confronts the problem by examining the difficulties with valuing the five known 1913 Liberty Head Nickels over the past century.

Excerpt:

". . . in December of 1919, Samuel W. Brown, who had retired from the mint six years earlier, placed a series of ads offering to pay $500 for a 1913 V nickel. Of course, at that time he alone (perhaps there were co-conspirators) knew of the existence of these coins. To the rest of the collecting community the only nickels dated 1913 displayed the Indian and the bison. A few months later, Brown upped his offer to $600 per piece, and later that same year (1920) he exhibited one of his 1913 V nickels at a national coin convention.

Though not a single example of these mysterious coins had ever traded hands (at least to anyone’s knowledge), Brown had elevated their value from five cents to six hundred dollars?Their perceived value anyway. . . ."

Last days to vote for American Numismatic Association's (ANA's) humor column contest

Mon, 19 Nov 2007 19:27:00 +0000
(Attention ANA Members: Voting to end soon! Cast your vote for your top three picks at humor@money.org with your top pick as #1. Make sure your email contains three names or the ANA will consider your vote invalid.)

Finding good humor is very difficult, since we all have different senses of humor and ways of finding different things funny. However, I'm pretty sure that everyone will find something to laugh out loud about in the offerings below. The American Numismatic Association's (ANA) official magazine, Numismatist, is looking for a new writer to take over their monthly humor column. To find just the right person, they ran a year-long contest, where each month one of twelve aspiring coin humorists had their turn trying to entertain us (and earn the right to try to do so for the next year under contract to the Numismatist.) . . .
